The Gaze of Others: atypical development of early social orienting in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ITA)

Abstract

Humans interact by means of the gaze from the earliest months of life: an infant recognizes eye contact and tends to follow the gaze of others. These behaviours are essential to the early emergence of social orienting, whose investigation has contributed to unveil the mechanisms influencing typical and atypical development. In fact, social orienting is significantly and precociously altered in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Eye-tracking studies tested the hypothesis that gaze might play a role in atypical developmental patterns and pathogenesis. This review discusses the related hypotheses, in the light of the heterogeneity and partial inconsistency of the results.

Gli esseri umani interagiscono attraverso lo sguardo fin dai primi mesi di vita: i bambinipreferiscono il contatto oculare diretto e tendono a seguire la traiettoria dello sguardo altrui. Questidue comportamenti costituiscono forme precoci di orientamento sociale, il cui studio ha contribuitoad ampliare la conoscenza dei meccanismi che regolano lo sviluppo tipico e atipico. Infatti,l’orientamento sociale conosce alterazioni significative e precoci nel Disturbo dello SpettroAutistico. Osservazioni, realizzate grazie alla tecnica della registrazione delle traiettorie deimovimenti oculari (i.e. eye-tracking), hanno dato luogo a ipotesi sul ruolo dello sguardo neicambiamenti evolutivi e nell’insorgenza della patologia. Il lavoro presenta e discute varie ipotesiinterpretative, anche alla luce dell’eterogeneità e parziale contraddittorietà dei risultati.
